Orthotics Q&A

Can orthotics stop foot pain?

Orthotics are heel pads or shoe inserts that support the structure of your feet. They’re an affordable and effective alternative to other treatments like podiatry lasers, physical therapy, and foot and ankle surgery.

At Prestige Podiatry Care, Dr. Panchal offers prescription orthotics from Earthwalk Orthotics, a podiatry lab in Massillon, Ohio.

What types of problems can orthotics treat?

At Prestige Podiatry Care, Dr. Panchal uses orthotics to treat a variety of foot and ankle problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Bunions
  • Bursitis
  • Hammertoes
  • Heel spurs
  • Flat feet
  • High arches
  • Plantar fasciitis

You might benefit from orthotics if you’re recovering from a sports injury or a traumatic injury and need extra heel or arch support.

Are there different types of orthotics?

At Prestige Podiatry Care, Dr. Panchal offers several types of orthotics, including:

Rigid orthotics

Rigid orthotics slip inside closed-toed shoes. They’re made from stiff and inflexible materials like plastic or carbon fiber and help support your arch and heel.

Flexible orthotics

Flexible orthotics are soft and bulky. They take pressure off of painful areas, like blisters, diabetic ulcers, or swollen heels. Because of their size, most flexible orthotics are worn with prescription footwear, like diabetic shoes.

What does getting orthotics involve?

If you have a specific foot problem, like bunions or plantar fasciitis, Dr. Panchal will recommend prescribing custom orthotics.

First, she uses a 3D digital scanner to take precise scans of your feet. Then, she sends your scans to the Earthwalk Orthotics lab in Ohio. Technicians at the lab use your scans to create a pair of orthotics designed to the exact dimensions of your feet.

It takes 5-7 days for the lab to make your orthotics. As soon as they arrive, you return to Prestige Podiatry Care to try them on.
